- Description
- The ‘mainstream’ of popular music, seen to be what the majority of music consumers engage in, is often thought to be a negative form of cultural production. In contrast, its usual oppositional framework, ‘alternative’ or ‘independent’ music, supposedly exhibits worthwhile minority tastes and is seen in some quarters as a more authentic form of musical expression. Music that charts successfully is seen to be a lesser form of music than that which struggles financially but views itself as ‘artistically credible’.
